The Twerkwifey Isn’t Just a Teenage Slut

Twerkwifey

No one disputes that young women who exhibit overly sexual behaviors in public should be encouraged to do so, yet people still call out individuals making these moves publicly despite them happening in their own communities and being completely unaware. We see examples such as “Twerkwifey,” banned from a restaurant for dancing and the mom caught at Six Flags twerking before her children – both examples serve to highlight this problem that goes beyond public displays of overt sexualization of youth by female individuals – yet this problem runs much deeper.

Twerking is a form of dance that originated in New Orleans’ bounce music scene and can be found throughout Africa’s diaspora, such as Senegal’s Malaya, Brazil’s Danca Funk and Jamaican Ventilateur dances. Twerking resembles movements associated with mounted intercourse with strong emphasis placed on showing off female buttocks.

Miley Cyrus recently made headlines for her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, which many felt was an offensive appropriation of black dance moves. While some white feminists attacked Miley for this act of racism appropriation, many black feminists stood by Miley without labelling her a slut or calling her any names for being sexual without being called names such as slut or lesbi-nation.

Louisiana high school senior with a 4.2 grade point average was removed from student government association presidency after video footage surfaced of her twerking at an afterparty for her homecoming dance, prompting some to accuse her of engaging in sexual behavior at such events. Now her mother has taken to Twitter in defense of her daughter and to address critics.
