This article highlights one stage in China’s long history of spirit-writing production by elites: canonization processes. Canonization included creating “complete books,” quanshu, for major savior gods (textual canonization) as well as conferring high-ranking titles by the imperial state upon these divinities (state canonization). Such efforts were driven by activism among elite groups that promoted values associated with their chosen divine saviors.
